Powell’s research focuses on the systematics and evolutionary history of the most diverse lineage of described life, Coleoptera, or beetles. His work currently spans descriptive taxonomy, classification, phylogenomics, and character evolution. Powell also strives to use natural history collections in each of these research areas and serves as the director for the NC State University Insect Museum.
